Chiyogami is the specific word developed to describe the graphic, repetitive designs applied to paper in the Edo period. Originally these patterns were printed by woodblock by Japanese papermakers during the farming season for use in paper doll and small accessory making. The designs were first based on the bright kimono textiles seen in larger cities. In the twentieth century, these patterns began to be applied using silk screens and this continues today. Many Chiyogami patterns are based on traditional designs, such as cranes for long life; bamboo for flexibility; plum blossoms and pine boughs for beauty and longevity.

Modern artists and craftspeople have vastly expanded the range of applications for Chiyogami. The most common uses are probably as cover papers for bookbinders, and as accents or envelope linings for invitations, but many other uses are possible and common. These include paper collage; lampshades; box-making; iris folding; origami; decorative packaging; washi eggs; art hangings and embellishments for stamping, doll maker, origami folder, scrapbooking and greeting cardmaking.
